Shop like a regular

• Come early. A line forms before the doors open at 1 p.m., and the best skis, boots and skates go fast. Some shoppers arrive around noon and grab lunch from the chuck wagon while they wait.
• Know your sizes. Write down shoe sizes, heights and weights for everyone you’re shopping for. Ski length and boot size depend on them.
• Bring the kids. Boots, skates and helmets fit best when they’re tried on, and volunteers can help with sizing.
• All sales are final, so check sizes and condition before you pay.
• Bring cash or a checkbook for small purchases, and a bag or a helper for big ones.
• Get skis checked. Have a ski shop inspect and adjust used bindings for the skier before heading to the slopes.
• Inspect helmets. Look for cracks or dents and check the date label. A helmet that has been in a crash should be replaced.
